Custody Poem by Anisha Nyambe

Custody

Sailing away
away from your world and mine.

Begging you to stay
a scene almost divine
a scene to behold, not mine
a scene of memories fine.

Chasing your brink
and dying everyday.

Slowly forgetting how to think
and caring what you say
and doing what you may
and having things your way

I said, 'Set me free
set me free from me'
My tears, let them be
part of my solo sea.

And your heart is the only one
in custody
that I'll hold
but want to release free.

Twiddling with air
motionless in eye

Torturing my glare
of captivated dye
of teardrop making cry
of leaves crumbling dry.

Make me a leaf
and tell me I'm dead

Sail to the reef
and make the stars your bed
and your heart free from my dread
and make my story one once read.

I said, 'Set me free
set me free from me'
My tears, let them be
part of my solo sea.

And your heart is the only one
in custody
that I'll hold
but want to release free.
