'Day And Night, On The Seas' Poem by Trevor Valentine

'Day And Night, On The Seas'

Day and Night, On The Seas
by Valentine

Silent, through the night-time waves
The bow cuts its course
The effervescent plankton
Rise, splash, break
And fall
Back into the water
From whence they came
Only to rise
Again and again
The fireflies of the water

Daylight has darkened
Almost into night
But still teases on the horizon
Unblocked and unfettered
Only the curvature of the Earth
Cradles its summer sleepless form
It meanders around
Ready to take another tour
While, as if intent on bolstering the fading energy,
The plankton, a million would-be suns
Dance
While the sailor looks on
And dreams.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Challenged by an upcoming event by the Gloucester Poetry Society, we were given the theme 'Day and Night'. I wrote two different poems, both based on experiences. This one recalls the sheer magic of sailing through the night on a 35' yacht, in mid-summer, seeing the plankton effervesce against the sides of the boat as it cuts its way through the water. It does really get fully dark at night in mid-summer around the UK shores. It is magical.
