Day Tripper Poem by Paul Brookes

Day Tripper

Rating: 4.0

the sea was hushed today, the tides turning stopped,
neither ebbing or flowing grey on green on grey.
seagull floats suspended, tomorrow comes and today ends
the hush settles a soft deep breath hissing anticipatory.

suns have set here before, this I know
the islands in the channel, green blobs, turns gold,
wish you were here the post card said.

so I came but too late you had left,
left on the last boat across the widening gulf,
into the setting sun and the eternal west to the land they say of no return.
