Dear Babes Poem by desamangalam ramakrishnan

Dear Babes

While ascending the hills
and descending the valleys
while resting down the dear babes
from the shoulders
while sprinkling a handful of flowers
on their chests
and spreading soil on them
and sighing as worms on the slope,
could anybody of us
foresee such a shock!

On this earth
where ceased all babblings
and sportive games of children,
could anybody of us
foresee this fate
that still we exist to mourn.

Lo, down there arise sorrowful cries,
we are getting down,
still we destined to exist
only for bearing the corpses.

Now there arrives
a childish dragonfly on the shoulder
and we suppress our grief
lest it feel frightened.
