Death Never Fades Poem by Mitzi Nichel

Death Never Fades

I can close my eyes and be 12 again
Fishing at the pond with my only friend
Drifting on through the dating years
Through the heartbreaks, he'd wipe the tears
Late teens, hanging in bars
Shooting pool, cherries from jars
Teaching me right from wrong
Showing me steps to a certain song
17 years to this day
He took his life away
There's anger inside
I can't begin to hide
The smell of death never fades
The visions of his blood
Going through his belongings
Saying goodbye so many times
Not knowing if he heard
Uncertainty fills me
The questions in my heart
But in my thoughts, we're not that far apart.

I miss you Dad.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

This is a mixed bag for anyone to comment on, because you can virtually give it any number from 6 to 10 and argue in some just manner for either. In my view though, you can't give it either a 6 or a 10. Nor can I given my own public standards give it a 9. This means it is either a 7 or 8 for me.8 means I recommend it 7 means I don't . The writer has chosen not to give us a vote here and that's fine. But in this case, I'm going to recommend this poem to others with the 8 because the deficiencies are soothed by the ending. To a reader, that's a lot. GW62
