Defining Myself Poem by Aimee Rozen

Defining Myself

Rating: 5.0

For far too long have I used you
as a guide on who to be,
when I should have learned
that it's okay to be me.
You placed your rules in effort
to teach me right from wrong.
While everyone my own age
showed what I needed to belong.
Now I suffer from OCD
so I could meet your perfectionist standards.
I get good grades in school,
maybe one day you'll tell me you're proud.
I wear the clothes that are 'cute'
to fit my tiny body.
Have I skipped enough meals
for you to think I'm beautiful too?
For far too long have I become
a product of you and society.
For far too long have I defined myself
as the person you wanted me to be.
