Desillusionment De Dix Heures. - Poem by Michael Walker

Les maisons sont hantees
Des robes de chambre blanches.
Aucune d'elles sont vertes,
Ou pourpres aux anneaux vertes,
Ou vertes aux anneaux jaunes,
Ou jaunes aux anneaux bleues.
Aucune d'entre elles n'est etrange,
Aux chaussettes de dentelle
Et des ceintures aux grains.
On ne va pas
Rever des babouins et des pervenches.
Seulement, ici et la, un vieux marin,
Ivre, et endormi dans ses chaussures,
Attrape des Tigres
Dans le temps rouge.

Poet's Notes about The Poem

Wallace Stevens makes obscurity an art form. He is very sensitive to colors. His imagery I find vivid. I first found his poems in three long anthologies of American poetry. The title caught my attention, by using two words that do not usually go together: 'emperor' and 'ice-cream'.
