Detachment Poem by Bireswar Halder

Detachment

The evening sun disperses its red and motley of colours in the sky
Like a canvas with its natural beauty, I feel overwhelmed
As if I am in meditation with a lovely creation of an invisible artist
And relaxing after a chain of chores typical of this worldly life.

A flight of white and lovely cranes flying to the nests with joy
It gives lots of pleasures when someone returns to his own sweet home
To meet the dear ones waiting for him all through the day
And to share the experience and knowledge with all.

I am sitting near the shore of a river to cross it over
And waiting eagerly for a boatman with my light baggage
After the sunset, the boatman arrives near me and I feel overjoyed
But he doesn't allow me to take the baggage with me. What to do!

Because of an intimate attachment, I am reluctant to leave it
As it contains some valuables I earned with vigorous labour and pains
Ultimately I fail to convince him and board the boat for my sweet home
My eyes fill with tears and I look on staring at this baggage till it disappears.

The kind hearted boatman consoles me nicely which relieves:
'You came empty handed and you are to leave in the same way.'
All my griefs and pains vanishes like a camphor in a moment
Oh what a great relief being detached from that little thing.
