Neither alpha folk nor betas
love waltzing to Waldteufel’s “Skaters.”
“Les Biens Aimés” and “Madeleine, ”
are waltzes that should also gain
as much esteem in every house
as those by batty Johann Strauss.
It’s not because he’s from Alsace
that he is much ignored alas.
The likely reason might well be
because he was a Jew like me,
a devil for the gentile hoods
around the lovely Vienna woods.
Until he’s danced by the Obamas
his music will be just for gammas.
Alan Chapman broadcast Emile Waldteufel’s “The Skaters” (“Les Patineurs”) on KUSC this morning.
