Oh, my, dear Liza, you have such faith in Donald Trump but what is wonderful is the nature of your faith, with its pure hopes for a better world, and most especially increased trust between America and Russia. But you deserve better than the type of person and politician Donald Trump is. I have observed him for some twenty years, and although I rarely pass judgment on people, he has never fulfilled my expectations of decency and altruism. He is an opportunist who uses people and then discards them. That's what he did with two wives in his personal life, that's what he did with hundreds of employees of his failed casino in his public iife. And that true gentleman and reflective politician, a man of great altruism, our President Obama, he hounded with unfair attacks on his character, even questioning Barack Obama's citizenship. And when he was proved wrong, he offered no apology, Donald Trump doesn't believe in apologies. But I do as I showed you this week. Donald Trump has personal qualities I cannot endorse, but many other Americans like them. They like the fact he is so self-confident, that he speaks impulsively, that he has opinions but little reflection. I know of real American leaders who have worked for the beautiful dream of peace and prosperity in your poem. Men like Adlai Stevenson, Eugene McCarthy, Hubert Humphrey, Paul Wellstone - they are all dead now but they were all shining lights of duty and service and not one of them bragged and blustered like Donald Trump. I wish you could have witnessed Hubert Humphrey. He was a so kind and generous to all people/ He didn't rile them up with anger but coaxed them to be better human beings and he emphasized not what's wrong with the world but what's right and how we can build on that. He brought joy whereas Donald Trump makes people share his anger. I do NOT trust that slogan MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. America is great enough in its prosperity, wealth, advantages and MILITARY MIGHT. What my fellow Americans need to acquire is HUMILITY not more pride. We don't need a leader who thinks he's right all the time but one who is reflective and cautious. My country, run by Republicans in crucial years, has been fighting and killing in war after war. Every effort Obama made to reduce the violence was frustrated by a Republican Congress and Trump is the Republican candidate. Dear Liza, I don't talk about politics very often. It causes arguments and bad feelings. But your poem dedicated toDonald Trump reminds me of the late Paul Wellstone, a fellow Minnesotan, one of our senators who was killed in a plane crash. He was a politician who reached out to the Republicans and worked with them for the common good. Republicans mourned his death along with his fellow Democrats. He was a politician who unified rather than divided people. He did not court celebrity status, his personal life was without scandal, he spoke eloquently, never in haste or anger. If his life had not been cut short, people would have an alternative to the Donald Trump-style of confrontational, belligerent politics.
