Dr. Watson Types Of Wives

DR. WATSON TYPES OF WIFE

The sort of wife I think that every man should pick
is one who’s always standing by his side,
his faithful Dr. Watson, fronting as sidekick,
who lionizes him and boosts his pride,
and lets the whole world know her man’s her Sherlock Holmes,
while acting as his fall-guy, nothing more,
recording all his brilliant deeds in lengthy tomes,
the lion king whom queenly she’ll adore.

Such Dr. Watson types of wife, I would presume,
are the ideal of every selfish spouse,
including me, though I’ve turned out to be the groom,
of her who is the mistress of my house.

Karl E. Meyer 'The Curious Case of the Immortal Sleuth') describes a [party in Manhattan celebrating the 146th birthday of Sherlock Holmes (NYT, January 19,2000) . When Conan Doyle wanted to kill him off in the 1890's his mother said: 'You won't! You can't! You mustn't! ' And so he lives on to this very day. According to Karl Meyer Doyle's greatest invention was the sidekick formula. My favorite is Sergeant Lewis, Inspector Morse's sidekick. My spellcheck does not recognize the name 'Sherlock, ' but my wife is more than a spellchecker and therefore hardly my sidekick, although I fantasize about having one.
