Dubai Poem by Madathil Rajendran Nair

Dubai

Dubai
The mushroom city
Of time in fast motion

Dubai
A dreamer's extravaganza
On man's unquenchable ambition

Dubai
Yesterday's barren expanse
Now a mirage growing unto heaven

A kaleidoscopic phantasmagoria
Of colours, glitter, light
Pomp, speed and wealth
All mounted together
On a speeding roller-coaster

Life a mere spectator
Standing aside unsure
An unwitting witness
Lame, insecure on its crutches

The play goes on and on
Ephemeral, transient
Spread all over, iridescent
On a boundless billboard
Eternal, impersonal

LIFE A MERE SPECTATOR/ STANDING ASIDE UNSURE Captures the velocity of change felt in a modern metropolis. A fine example of poetic compression and paradox. Life is personified, yet is cast in a passive role. Life is witness but it cannot know what is brewing.

absolutely right. Dubai is a City: offering you plenty; taking away plenty too. It takes away you time with family, instead you are on the road; It gives you wealth and instead takes a toll on your health; You see colors and yet you will notice the blind spot if you look hard enough, You are a spectator. this is the world i am in now. But it is my home; as i have my family here; my home here and my bread here. And i do not like to degrade the place that has offered me lots of opportunities too.In spite of all the drawbacks, I am thankful to the Almighty.

How man's ingenuity has turned a sterile stretch of sand into a phantasmagoria of colors, glitter, wealth and magnificence! We can only be mute spectators of what more time will do to this city of splendour! Another great write!
