Eldritch, Texas Poem by Richard D Remler

Eldritch, Texas

..........

Welcome to Eldritch, Texas.
Population ten.
Seems we had more living folks
Way, way, way back when.
Now we only cater
To the few who never sleep.
And we never ask those questions
To the secrets we can't keep.

The bowling alley on Farrell Drive
Keeps its lights down low.
It's no longer the kind of place
A bowling man might go.
The floors, they're littered up and back
With things we best not see.
And if you hear a troubled cry,
You best let it be.

Up Wisteria Road, it always rains
Even when it's dry.
Up Wisteria Road, you'll nary see
A thunderhead amble by.
Yet, still it pours. The wind, it roars.
And shudders every tree.
Up Wisteria Road is not the place
A smart man ought to be.

And up there near the Graveyard,
Oh, the spooks, they gather 'round.
They'll whisper lost forget me not's
Where old head stones are found.
Sometimes you'll hear their laughter,
And a shriek to steal your calm.
And they'll drink in every teardrop
As you run on home to Mom.

Welcome to Eldritch, Texas,
Population Nine.
It seems ol' Bertram left us.
But I hear Bertram's doing fine.
He's up there near the Graveyard,
Waiting patiently in line,
For a cedar box to lie in,
And that drink of fools wine.
