Empty Apartment Poem by Sydney Daniels

Empty Apartment

Rating: 4.5

My heart is an empty apartment.
The rooms chill with silence,
Suffocating my hopes of ever
Finding someone who wants to rent.

Footprints litter the floor,
Outlined in the dust.
Revealing not one set but many of those
Who have tread on it before.

I took down the sign,
Turned off the electricity,
Put all my feelings in storage,
Locked the door one last time.

Days and weeks passed,
The state of my heart in constant decline.
I couldn't risk the upkeep,
Previous renters had left it too fast.

Sometimes you find what you were looking for
During the times you aren't searching at all.
Your references checked, your credit was good,
I was shaking with trepidation when you turned the key in the door.

First the electricity came on,
The rooms filled with warmth
Memories of footprints faded
As you became a tenant of which I was fond.

You began moving in, one piece at a time,
A toothbrush in the bathroom,
Your favorite food in the fridge,
The bed you moved in was mine.

Fond turned to love, renter to buyer,
The key to my heart the ring on my finger.
This apartment is sold, it belongs to you
Only Heaven can take me higher.
