Encore Un. Poem by Michael Walker

Encore Un.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
A very good poem about the dark side of modern city life.Obvious repetition of'one more'-rhetoric-very effective. It is a left-wing poem: 'one more room at a criminal rent, /one more landlord trying it on', lines 7,8. This criticism of landlords is true, from my experience of renting. I agree with this statement about owners and tenants. The poet has acute power of observation: 'one more barman passing short change'-l.8,9.Good use of colloquial language-; 'trying it on'. It all adds up to a standout poem.
