Enjoyment Poem by Frederick Francis

Enjoyment

A funny thing enjoyment can be.
Sly, mysterious and difficult to see.
If it is quantity you look for, the outlook is bleak.
If volume sustains you, your outlook seems meek.

But if the volume you seek, you're determined to find,
You’d be best off to alter your current state of mind.
The volume you seek exists, just not in one place.
It needs to be taken in, as small and separate tastes.

To illustrate this point, imagine an exquisite dessert.
That explodes your senses, but begins with a flirt.
You would not gorge yourself in just one sitting.
Because repeated enjoyment seems far more fitting.

Whether it is one bite or twelve, you have the sensation.
It is not the ends that matter, indulge the creation.
So the same with enjoyment, focus on the duration.
Ignore the surroundings the timing and appreciate the creation.

Because it’s this creation that matters, it’s this you should heed.
It’s through knowing how to create that you’ll fill your quantifiable need.
But do not attempt to create more enjoyment, at this you will fail.
A forced moment of enjoyment will be to no avail.

Just pay attention to each moment as it comes your way.
And capitalize on the ones that could brighten your day.
You’ll capture the smallest enjoyment, of inconsequential amount.
But this is what is meant by it’s the small things that count.

You’ll see in due course, your need will meet satisfaction.
To such an extent it might even cause you distraction.
But with too much enjoyment, here’s what you do.
Pass it on to others, the ones that matter to you.
