In the shadow of addiction's call,
I found a love, the deepest fall.
A love so fierce, it consumed my light,
More than myself, a perilous plight.
I loved them more than I could bear,
Their pain, their joy, I longed to share.
But in the grip of this fierce affection,
I lost myself, lost my direction.
For in the throes of this toxic dance,
My own needs never stood a chance.
Their demons became my own to fight,
Blurring the lines of wrong and right.
Yet, love is not a martyr's game,
Nor a candle dwindling in the flame.
True love must kindle, must respect,
The self that we too often neglect.
So let this be a solemn vow,
To love oneself as we allow,
The love for others to take its place,
Not more, not less, but with equal grace.
My faithful friend in all my grief, In thy soft arms I find relief; In thee forget my woes: Unfeeling waste my wint'ry day And pass with thee the night away, Reclin'd in soft repose. Iolo Morganwg 1794 ‘To Laudanum' WNTL? ? !
