Equivocal Poem by Andrew Dabar

Equivocal

She offered him a blue heart
A tiny piece of Brach's candy with a red message
"BE MINE"
He smiled
Officially
This will be our first Valentine's Day together
Are we still together?
Unofficially, she said
Ring or no ring, he argued
True love is ours for the consumption
Well
That word can be taken either way, she replied with a weary sigh
Indeed, said he, and broke the heart between his teeth
Sucking the life out of a dissolving sweetness
Until the invitation disappeared
Into the wet darkness of his throat
