Eternity Now Poem by Ananta Madhavan

Eternity Now

Rating: 4.3

I found in a neglected book a quote:
"Eternity is the Standing still of the Present".
That is attributed to ‘Leviathan',
By Thomas Hobbes,1651.

Eternity is now. We mislead ourselves
When we reckon what is beyond measure.
Our greatest faculty,
More precious than our reasoning,
Is imagination. We make icons and compare
Things beyond mimetics and metaphors,
Even email Smileys, emoticons and emojis.
Let us not numb this gift. We do not need
Ersatz sentiments to communicate
Between you and someone if both feel

Eternity is Now.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I often feel the difficulty of communicating my feelings
and impressions exactly through words. We have invented
emoticons and smileys, even 'frownies', gestures and silence,
when we are at a loss to transmit the shades and nuances we want.
We have to make compromises, using gestures and metaphors. But I think EM Foster was right in choosing the maxim, 'Only connect'.
