Every Blessing Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Every Blessing

Remember to give thanks
For every blessing
However tiny
However temporary
However expected.

Today I give thanks
For a trial still unwon.
A reprieve,
A space to breathe,
A labyrinth in which
To find my inner bearings
Before I face my own fears.

Tomorrow will follow me
Unrelentingly.
There is no escape.
Only a coward would slink away
Leaving the last days
To braver sentinels.

But tonight I sleep peacefully.
The unknown has been borne.
The imagined has been exorcised.
The worst has been postponed.

What I will wake to
I cannot predict.
I will not ask for anything
Except the mental strength
To comfort one who is loved.
