Between The Pages Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Between The Pages

Rating: 4.2

Find me a book
And let me get lost in it.
Open the cover
And shut out the world.

Read to me
In that pleasing voice of yours
As we sit here in the window seat
With its faded cushions and dated drapes.

Make me feel as old as this manor
As young as the clouds floating by
As innocent as the daisies below
In the garden some gentlewoman once tended.

Transport me with lines of prose
To a sitting room with pretty women
Stiff and formal in muslins and gloves,
With heirloom lace and velvet bows.

Then enter like a gentleman
Muddy from the hunt
Hale and hearty
Smelling of horse sweat.

Sit next to me and whisper.
Make me blush.
Make me nearly spill my tea
In my rush to cover my face with my fan.

Then suggest an assignation
For later in the day
Which I will pretend to dismiss
While plotting my escape.

If I can get past my maiden aunt
Who guards me like some family jewel,
I may await you in the Gothic folly
Where you my virtue can overrule.

Then, when this weekend ends,
And I trade these pantaloons for jeans
And you that riding crop for a set of keys
We can race back into the present
And our lumpy bed in our tiny flat
In Leeds.

A beautiful fantasy, but fantasies often become fact.
