Life Humbles Me Poem by Suzanne Hayasaki

Life Humbles Me

Life humbles me.
In all of its complexity,
Its depth
Its fathomlessness.

Every decade I spend
In this world
In this skin
In this existence

Shreds my confidence
In my knowledge
Of what is, what was,
What should be,
And leaves me with a heap
Of dead feathers.

And still the phoenix within
Sings to me of a reality
Deeper than any I see
And assures me
That if I can look out at the world
Without flinching in the face of so much pain

It will eventually regain an equilibrium
Not planned, not manufactured
But jolted into place by natural forces
Deep in the core of the real.
