Expectant Gaze Poem by Adeoye Adetoba

Expectant Gaze

Expectant gaze sullen with endless wait
Weary the spirit drowns and ebbs away.
Gleeful prance debased to a humble gait
Sighting lofty dreams muddled in the clay.

Tomorrow is stolen in sacks of greed,
Carted away by the callous hands of few.
Abject many holding to hopeful creed
When dreams disappear like a falling dew.

Everyday is nighttime and gravely dark.
Dawn is turned off thoughts and from hopeful sight.
Ill-fated like the damned outside Noah's ark,
The scourge of the avarice mocks at their plight.

Their sights fixed to the heavens prolonged,
Waiting for victory they thought belonged.
