its branches winter bare—
he waits on patient haunches.
No doubt he knows

THE CONVENIENT CAT- that's a striking metaphor. Do the cats like it? // Wisteria is a sweet-smelling flower but it's winter so it's dead. I think this cat has that MIND OF WINTER Stevens spoke of because his situation is cold and desolate but he's PATIENT. He is perfectly poised in the second stanza, knows he will survive, at one with his fate, he is almost self-sufficient.
the title convenient cat refers to the convenience for observation (with a few exceptions) of cats that have been part of our family. (my wife's a cat person.) this poem describes in verse the patient stalking behavior of our first family cat, sesame. patient hunters these felines. and thanks, daniel, for checking this poem out as well. -glen
