Farewell To The City Poem by Ayhan Diril

Farewell To The City

The city is choking me with its sharp claws.
Buildings all surround us like prison walls.
I miss the water pouring down the waterfalls.
Farewell to the city, hi to my village.

No fragrance in artificial flowers.
Pavements are occupied by fake lovers.
Empty bottles float in the angry seas.
Dirty smokes of the chimneys make me sneeze.

All I need is a one-way ticket.
Let me turn back to my village.
Everybody has mobiles in their hands.
Nobody talks to me on my sands.
Naughty kids run on the streets,
busy kicking the smashed cans.

Friends are no sincere in this city.
What would I do without this kitty?
Hard paving stones lie under my feet.
Where is the freshly cut grass?
Where are the men harvesting wheat?

Where are the singing birds, flowing streams?
I miss the cheerful trees dancing in the winds.
Farewell to the bright city lights.
Hi to the village, hi to the shining stars!

I miss my quiet village so much.
Who misses the ruined provinces
when my untouched nature is there?
Sound of jumping fish in the lake
is the only one I like to hear.

Oh, black smoke rising from the factories!
Stay where you are! Leave my sky clear.
You too, ear-scratching noise of the cars.
Please, no longer disturb my sphere.

How joyful the village girls
with henna-scented hands.
Wait for me, fertile lands.
Farewell to the city, hi to my village.
