Eyes wide shut, night after enervating night
Haunted by the constant spectre that
Footsteps fade in water.
The mouse roars to the jungle
and fills my inner ear with abject thoughts,
steals my sleep of babes,
that empty echoes will ripple down the years.
My sun-shadow shortens.
No mere fear of death plagues/stalks me.
Only that miasmic fear of dying before
my footsteps are set in the earth.
And beside me, my life partner softly snores,
oblivious to the storm within.
