Fear Poem by Rodgers Ogola

Fear

Someone once asked me what my greatest fear is
I responded with surety I'm afraid of failure
But now that I think of it with a sober mind
I've come to the conclusion that I'm afraid of fear itself
Because fear smothers the soul
It's devours the individual whole
Leading people like cattle to the slaughter house of conformity
Cause from fear comes worry
And from worry comes the seeking of safety
So we push on looking for that safe place that doesn't exist
Boxing ourselves in with accepted norms
Accepting tradition without question
So that we may belong
And we live each day like zombies in this journey of life
Never daring to defy
So that the defiant few control the subservient many
And they are truly many those who will not dare bring change
Fear sucks the energy of self and fans the fire of 'the group'
So I fear fear, I dread it like a prey dreads a predator
For it may be like the puppet master
Controlling my every dead
