First Poem by Oliver Roberts

First

I open my eyes
for the first time.
For the first time,
you are beside me
and I hold you to me
the way i imagined I would the first time.
I used to watch you silently from a distance,
hidden away from you.
For the first time now, in this bed,
we are hiding together,
hiding from everyone,
hiding from the world.

For the first time,
I hear you sleeping
and smell your kiss on the pillow.
I talk to you for the first time
with soft hands,
with my fingers on your cheeks.
We have new bodies now,
and new faces that will say new things
when our stares turn quiet.
You turn and smile,
it's your first smile today
and I see it first.

For the first time,
there's a gap in the curtains
and the sun comes in.
We're enfolded in the morning,
you and I,
escapees,
reaching and touching
and holding and tasting.
For the first time
I see what your clothes look like on the floor,
I see the colour of your socks.
When I first saw you,
I had never seen such big eyes
and now, this morning,
they are even bigger.
They are open now,
for the first time.
