First Time Poem by Itai Oscar

First Time

I had my first breakthrough when
I came out of the womb through
the birth canal
I inhale-d my first breath on earth
the air filled with antiseptic smell
my lungs received as if it was normal air

The umbilical chord was cut
I had to ingest for the first time
with eagerness I sucked like a vacuum cleaner

My first time to be in the arms of a woman
my first time to recieve love
I lay in her arms with equanimity
knowing that nothing will harm me

The first time I opened my eyes
people were shadowy figures moving around

The first time I heard my mother's voice
it was so tender and full of love
as she sang a lullaby

I had my first bowel movement which was wiped with such gentleness I had to do it again

I didn't have much balance when I took my first step
but I took it anyway
I fell several times
but I got up and tried again

Let's embrace first things in life with baby innocence
fear of the unknown holds us back
from experiencing the first things in our lives
