For George Herbert

The small birds chirped through the summer grass
They chirped you are not alone, you are not alone
The Father watches from His throne
They sang. So heartfull and at ease.
All through my soul a sad long day
I heard that birdsong surge in waves
Like water gushing in a desert place
All withering done I found my sun
The dewdrop glistening the welcome crumb
I found a way to keep on praying
As if to May blossoms swaying
And sang and sang myself to sleep
And put away the need to weep.
