Forever Friend To Thee Poem by Madelene Calalo

Forever Friend To Thee

I could not do much but watch the suffering I bring.
I could not say much for every word might scar your very being.
Should I try to come closer, I could not bear
The thought that my presence is not for you to share.

But for everything you have given me - everything you have said to me
That have enlightened me through the paths of life;
For all the time you’ve spared for me, all the pennies you’ve wasted on me,
All the joy, the care, the love you’ve tried your hardest to give
For all these, my appreciation I devote to you whole-heartedly

But to return equally what you have provided
My heart has no will to do so.
My mind does not permit me to do so.
My soul prevents me from doing so.
I want to, but I can’t.
I struggle with my every attempt.

I’m sorry that it had to be this way.
Sorry that I may have mistakenly fooled you when it was myself I forced to disarray.
I’m sorry to have pushed you away so suddenly.
It was something I needed to do badly.
I’m sorry I had no courage to reveal
that you will only be a friend for me.
But surely, even if you’ll hate me for this,
You will forever be a well- remembered friend to thee.

I’m sorry.

Wow. I remember years ago needing to tell one that I only had feelings of friendship even though we had dated for months. I felt horrible knowing the hurt I was causing but yet knew it was necessary for me to go on to find the one that would make me feel the way that I made the one I had to hurt feel. Love can be so complicated!
