Freedom Fighters Poem by simbarashe moyo

Freedom Fighters

They sacrificed their lives
They sacrificed their joy and happiness
They sacrificed their freedom
And they decided to leave their families
For their beloved country

They went for days without food
And they slept in the forests without comfort
They were wounded and killed
Their clothes were soaked in blood,
Their hearts soaked with tears
And the forests soaked with their sweat

When many expected them to give up, they didn’t
And when many expected them to faint
They kept soldiering on
When many expected them to weep
They fought like men.

When others were busy working for money
They were busy fighting for their country
When many were in schools
They were in the forests
When others were having parties and tears of joy
They were being wounded and killed shedding tears of pain
When others were in the comfort of their homes with nothing to fear
They were in the forests afraid of the enemy and wild animals

They never asked for incentives
Neither did they ask for leave days
For they loved their country more than their lives
