From Kentucky Poem by Randy McClave

From Kentucky

I'm here from Kentucky
Where we all are born plucky,
We are all from the hills
Where hunting and fishing is our main skills.
Here 'Hollow' is called a 'holler'
And when we date we are called a "caller",
And in the warm summertime skies
We catch" "lightnin bugs" and not 'fire flies'.
If you ever head over our way
Come barefooted and bring your youngins we will say,
If your playing a banjo and singing a song
Then we know you'll never go wrong.
If here a freshwater delicacy you do seek
Remember this, we ain't got 'crawfish' in the 'creek',
But, if you have bait on a string on a stick
We got 'crawdads' in the 'crick'.
Taters is always mandatory
To which we always gives thanks in every story,
Many I have read like eating fine foods at the ritz
We eat our fine food at grandma's when she makes grits.
'Y'all' is a proper noun
Which causes many foreigners to laugh or frown,
And since we all live rural
Y'all is also the plural.
Sweet tea is always the house wine
Chicken is always fried when we dine,
Biscuits always comes with gravy
Our mashed taters are spooned out wavy.
We have beautiful women and fast horses
Through our bluegrass blood and soul that fact courses,
Our family we will always defend and protect
And our elders, ya never ever disrespect.
