GNOMON Poem by Jan Lauwereyns

GNOMON

Stick a stick in the ground,
A bolt-upright stick in a small piece
of billiard-table-flat ground.

Stick: pole, erection.

Wait for the sun and note the way
your measuring instrument stands steadfast

in the light of the heat.

Bright air, brilliant fire
but what matters/counts is the shadow,

the unveiling of the earth.
