'' Wake itte mo wake itte mo aoi yama '' '' going deeper / and still deeper - / the green mountains '' Mountains appear mysterious, difficult to grasp.. Although mountains seem to be impenetrably high and wide, the poet throws himself into their depth.

As Santōka wrote: ''Westerners like to conquer mountains; Orientals like to contemplate them. As for me, I like to taste the mountains.''
