Good Night Poem by Emdad Shah Emdad

Good Night

by Emdad Shah

Since you have no sleep within your eyes
I too have shunned the dark of endless skies
With whispered words of love to keep me near
Bid me goodnight, my love and hold me dear.

The moon ascends the night in pallid grace
While venom masks the errors of the place
If sleep should flee your pillow in the night
Come to my window, bathed in silver light
Though lotus stems may pierce your feet in pain
My heart shall drink the blossom of that stain.

Take up the letter, stained in crimson hue
And whisper soft goodnights, my love, to you.

You are the moon, the star, the blooming flower
Who floods my banks within this quiet hour
A midnight bloom, with sorrow in your veins
Like bride-mark red that on the brow remains
The fairest bride that ever grace did know
You shed your petals as the breezes blow.

Bring me that garland, let the petals fall
And whisper goodnight, love, to end it all.

The moon has caught a tint upon its crest
And pours its nectar down to give us rest
Before this darkness fades and slips away
Let all our words in baskets softly sway
The night will come, the night will surely go
I linger in the words you used to know.

Weave me a garland of the things you say
And whisper goodnight, love, before the day.

The moon and blossoms watch the silent deep
What words are asked while all the others sleep?
My soul awakens, stirred by phantom sighs
To ask what longing in the silence lies—
I hold us both upon my wings of flight.

Take me, oh take me, in the fading light
And whisper goodnight, love, to end the night.

The stars are singing in the vaulted height
May peace descend upon your sleep tonight. Goodnight, goodnight—the hour is growing late
As evening blossoms bow beneath their fate
Within my dreams, I open wide my eyes
And let the ghosts of romance softly rise.
