Darkness Is The Enemy Of Light

by Emdad Shah

Man is a product of evolution, broad is his working domain
He sows the azure corn, poor man—of varied toil and pain
Wide is his field of battle, his world-embracing sphere
Yet all the poor and toiling men, ye strike with kick and jeer
And none among you lifts a cup to wet his parched mouth here.

Within his home a harsh-faced wife, yet love is vast and deep
Thou art by nature all unfit, poor woman, let him reap
Instead of plunging into seas of doubt, embrace his form
This unlovely, toiling, poor man, through every wind and storm
For thy unfitness, stretch the bounds of loving, wide and free
When grew'st thou human, when a woman—where is thy majesty?
Cast off thy idle, fabled tales, shake off the brain's dark rust
The hapless man and his sweat-scented toil are equal in the dust.

Yet down the ramparts of the night the stained dark will glide
Like hostile armies blocking up the poor man's gateway wide
Unworthy is the foe, yet he will scorn the poor man's plea
What worth has he, what has he won, in what strange agony?
The death-call of the wind invites, the stars in silence speak
The toiling mortal plays alone the mournful flute of the meek.

Upon his dark wings, like to death, all inner hopes decay
In silent gloom the faded speech of dumb men melts away
Fear and suspense assail the door, despair wakes in the breast
As though an endless war were waged where fiends and mortals rest.

A noble life will wander by, and leave an imprint deep
Along the path of light the dark and earthly curses sleep.

Yet hear, O traveler, in this life, brief-lived, there is no loss
Nor does the night forever forge the fate that mortals cross
Though all the sable enemy may stretch his shadow's power
The very first sweet beam of dawn shall break his haughty hour.

Within that shadow deep and dark, a foeman haunts the street
And at the heart's-gate sings his sad and melancholy beat
He longs to shroud in sheets of fear the spirit's secret song
And light-athirst, the spirit pauses, though the way be long.

Yet hear, O wandering brother, cast all foolish doubts away
For after tempests blow, the blooms of wildwood scent the day.

The darkness is not everlasting, this is time's decree
Have patience, all the bloody fears of ancient foes shall flee
Behold across the eastern sky awakes the morning star
As streams of heaven pierce the cloud and wander from afar.

The sword of light divides the web where heavy shadows cling
With joy the throbbing universe resumes its mighty ring
Life is a field of battle, and retreat is grievous sin
With patience and with courage, let the ancient wrath be win
Though strong the dark foe's hand may be, eternal truth is grand
At morning's touch it melts away, truth rules through every land.

Leave footprints on the paths of truth, and walk the righteous way
And give to all who labor here the honest dues they pay.
