Gossamer Sentiments Poem by Bryan Taplits

Gossamer Sentiments

I see your portrait once again and here is what it told:
'Don't worship me- repeatedly-
'Not MY fault your heart's been sold.
'I'm just myself and no one else
'I'll never be another
'So don't handle me
'I must be me! -
'Steer towards another rudder!
'Too flattering are your civilities;
'Embarrassing are your pants and patter;
'Too overwhelming are your needs and wants
'Yes!
'A rebuffing is now in order.
'If someday I need a door
'To throw open and receive sweet fodder,
'I‘ll find you-or another one-
'My setting sun-
'Whom I'll deign to be my 'other.'

But still I pined for what I saw
Of that pretty pictured one-
A harvest from a rising sun
A painting of the dawn.
But if we ever did re-meet-
Below the stippled sky-
Still, I wouldn't court or seek you my dear,
And do you know why?
Because...?
Though you are most appealing
And make my heart soar high
If I don't quit-I must admit-
I'm afraid I shan't survive.
So I say a rueful goodbye
To your portrait hanging oh so proud
That forages in my memory
Below my rain soaked clouds.
And as I wing away to fly-
Leaving you above my dizzy fall-
I must re-call and remember all!
Your flaws! Oh your Flaws!
So:
I shan't renew and not repeat:
And to the canvas I'll say 'Goodbye'
I'll fling it up and away, dear one,
And with that canvas gone-
Will soon give us another try.
