Grandpa - Poem by Matthew Weber

To the man who taught me more in twenty years
Then I could dream of learning in a lifetime
Helped me conquer all my fears
And even save a dime

How to care, how to love
And how to selflessly live
How to make the most of everyday
You’ve been blessed to live

I admire you more
Then you will ever know
And probably more
Then I allowed to show

As corny as it sounds
You were always my hero
Forget the Hulk, Michael Jordan,
Even the green and gold

You gave me life skills and tools
Not learned in school
No matter how old you got
Always, to me, remained cool

The way you “blew up” your bicep
Or pulled quarters from my ear
Taught me how to wrestle
And take a “lickin” without fear

You toughened me up
And for that I thank you
To all my success you’ve contributed
I hope you know that’s true

Achieved more than most with degrees
With little education
Earned everything you had
It was all your creation

As much as I laughed
At some of your ways
Drinking prune juice in the mornings
For reasons I won’t say

Or honey for breakfast
Always on toast
You still helped me realize how pointless
To brag and boast

If you’ve been successful
You can remain silent
Let your accomplishments do the talking
Or your own image you dent

All the days I watched you fall asleep after drops
Holding your eyes together
I never thought you’d someday
Fall asleep forever

A foolish thought yes I know
But you seemed so invincible

Although not physically
The man that I saw in that hospital bed
Was the same grandpa id always known
Strong and handsome you remain in my head

You fought till your last breath
Which I’m sorry I couldn’t see
When the cancer and the heavenly father
Took you from me

I know you’re in a better place
Watching big time wrestling
Boxing, John Wayne movies
And even reminiscing

Talking Gods ear off
Of your days as a boy
Turning into a man
All the things you enjoy

Thank you for serving our country
Allowing me to be free
And for my first car
Even though it was plastic, and mini

I hope I can make you proud
The rest of the family too
But most of all grandpa
I want to grow up to be…just like you.
