Guest To Mennonites Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

Guest To Mennonites

Guest to Mennonites

Was guest to Mennonites,
They were nice, very kind,
Had a room, bed, and wine.

They took me all around,
To school, milking cows,
To church and read Bible.

Were good hosts,
Nothing was in hiding,
I saw what could be seen.

Saw how they trained kids,
Their women, treatments.

But still between us
Stood an iron wall.

Men's apron, apparels,
Women in scarves, skirts.

In the church, divided
Were the males and females.

In love with the farming
Uprooted most trees…

In our house, my parents
Always were equal…

Dad told us to respect
His queen, our mother
We did not dare, never,
Ignore her, disrespect.

Mennonites, my friends,
Were very different,
With women and trees!

They enjoyed ploughing
And sowing, harvesting!
