He Is Not One Of The Rare Breed Poem by Francis Duggan

He Is Not One Of The Rare Breed

He is not one of the rare breed who to the higher self is true
But he is not a bad sort for to give him his due
He never beats his wife and children and he never beats his dog
But he does have his addictions in his fondness of nicotine and grog.

On saturday evening at the local pub he joins in the sing along
To him the great things in life are cigarettes, whiskey and song
He goes to the pub for socializing and when intoxicated he never looks for fight
He enjoys the bar-room atmosphere and he drinks, laughs and sings all night.

Yet despite his many frailties he lives a moral life
And he is one who has never been unfaithful to his wife
He works hard for a livelihood and he does not have a care
He truly is a character and men like him are rare.

In saying he's not free of vices I'm not saying what is new
But he is quite a character and men like him are few
And though he will never reach his higher self he is quite a good bloke
He provides for his family though he likes to drink alcohol and smoke.
