He Saluted Me Poem by Kimberly Burnham

He Saluted Me

De mo-š səlōm ka
he saluted me
in Kuhpāya spoken
words of Central and Western Iran
one of many dialects
endangered and being overrun
by Persian speaking peace

Səlōm a Kuhpāya salutation
a loan word from Arabic
said salaam
and reminiscent of Hebrew
shalom or šlama in Neo-Aramaic

Solh or sula
âšti or ârâmeš
tranquility quiet harmony
in Persian or Farsi
given voice in Iran

The words have found a way
to travel in peace
now we must do likewise
