Hearts Burst Poem by John Mackinnon

Hearts Burst

Hearts Burst 11th May 2016
(For Jeannie)

Hearts burst
Like sprung flowers
Freed from their growing
Freed from their knowing
That day's to come
Must share them
With the cold
Of night.

Hearts fade
As fleeting hours
Speed to their ending
Speed to their rending
That truth alone
Must spare them
From the cold
Of lies.

By light
As gone the cold,
We hear them.
Their voice alone
Speaks of their leaving
Speaks of their meaning
Empowered
By our hearts that burst.

Their hearts
Their loves
Their dreams
All come to this
As sprung flowers
Waiting
For their time
To lessen
And depart
Unseen.

And we their seeds
Must burst,
With all we learned,
With all that hurts,
And all the beauty
That has lain between.
