Vietnam 1969 Poem by John Mackinnon

Vietnam 1969

Rating: 5.0

Vietnam 1969

All his life he lived by the sea
And often dreamed of the gentle tide
That lapped gingerly
On his Vietnam.
Probing in the rocks for crabs
Sliding under their shells
And drawing back
When they lay naked on the sand.

The people often heard him
Singing softly to himself
About his tide and the soft water
That he dwelt in,
Yet when the soldiers came
And dragged him helpless by his hands
Bewildered as the sun descending
Cast his shadow on the sands
He lay naked where they left him
Pegged by a bayonet to the ground
And in the rising tide
He drowned.

Very sad and tragic story of man inhumanity to man - horrible brutality of war, well articulated and elegantly penned with conviction. Thanks for sharing John. Please read my poem MANDELA - THE IMMORTAL ICON.
