-here’s to the night-
When I began to say goodbye
Staring into the fire
Pretending I was alright.
Until you asked why
I had sad eyes, I didn’t
Know you saw me.
I was convinced that all you saw
Was what you had left,
The various regrets
And knew I was a brief
Distraction.
Even knowing that
I still lay next to you
Succumbing to well honed advances.
After you slept
I watched while you slept
Memorizing your features
Trying to convince my heart
That the pain to come was worth it.

Beautifully and poignantly written, Jody. A poem I will re-visit for it's sheer heart-breaking passion, so well expressed. Love, Fran xxx
