Hidden Behind My Eyes Poem by Linda Barnes

Hidden Behind My Eyes

Don't ask me once again
Why my eyes show no light
Why they look sad or bewildered
Instead of like a brilliant star

It's like the curtain fell
On the last performance
Of a musical without instruments
And voices you do not hear

Or looking out on the plains
Seeing a lonely rider
Who is headed for the hills
Cowering from the wind and rain

Or seeing a lost dog
On the side of the road
Looking for food and water
Not knowing where to go

Or a small child all alone
As she becomes frightened
Realizing she wondered off
Too far from her loved one

Sometimes my eyes are brown
When they are crystal blue
Just smoked covered lenses
When I remember you
