Hindi As A National Language (A Nondescript Linguistic Alternative History) Poem by Bijay Kant Dubey

Hindi As A National Language (A Nondescript Linguistic Alternative History)

Hindi was not so as we see it today,
It was a mixture of dialects,
Khari Boli, Braj Bhasa, Sadhukaddi, Rajasthani
A direct descendant of Sanskrit
Authorising it to be in hegemony
As for being spoken and understood in different parts.

But what is more intersting to see,
How do those who do not know Hindi
They too love to see films
And to quote dialogues,
How did the rail and the telegraph,
The radio and the post-office
They too popularized it!

The Hindi of the military barracks,
The language of the Angrez sahibs with orderlies,
Wandering of Naga sadhus and sadhakas
As our cultural ambassadors,
The railway announcements with regard to trains
By non-Hindi speakers on strange language platforms
With different geographical populace
Have definitely added to
After hearing the unheard heard
In the making of a national language
