Hindu - Song of the Beginning
Prabir Kumar Gayen
Hindu life, Hindu death,
Hindu breath moving through
bone and silence.
Hindu air, Hindu water,
Hindu fire of the sun that wakes the seed.
Hindu is the song of life
sung before language learned its tongue.
Hindu sky, Hindu space,
the open palm of creation.
Hindu is the muse of becoming,
Ida and Pingala braided in light,
Saraswati flowing as thought and sound.
Hindu earth, Hindu moon,
Hindu the prayer without demand.
Hindu the object of meditation,
mother and daughter in one mirror,
the plain where eternal peace rests its head.
Hindu is hero and heroine,
Savarkar and Khudiram in flame,
Netaji Subhas, Jatinder Nath,
names carved in courage.
Hindu is man and God,
poem and epic breathing each other.
Hindu is the soul of the earth,
the prana of the world.
Hindu is beauty remembering itself,
Rabindranath's song,
Vivekananda's thunder.
Hindu is Svetaketu listening to silence,
the ancient call of Tat Tvam Asi.
Hindu is Aham Brahmasmi
spoken by the wind.
Hindu is the unheard language
understood by all beings.
Hindu is Ramakrishna and Buddha,
Heraclitus, Lao Tzu, Pythagoras,
fires from different hills
meeting in one sky.
Hindu is Parasurama, Aurobindo, Rumi,
Arjuna and Hanuman moving in one pulse.
Hindu is Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati,
Himalaya, Aravalli, Alps,
Mariana's depth and Kailash's stillness,
Tibet and Sahara breathing one earth.
Hindu is Debabrata, Santanu,
Dibyendu, Priya bata and Priyanka,
Rajesh, Rakesh, Rishikesh,
the ordinary made sacred.
Hindu is fountain and flow,
river and ocean,
drop remembering the sea.
Hindu is nothing and everything,
the bird's single note,
the orchestra of stars,
the sound of one hand clapping
inside the heart.
Hindu is Gita on the battlefield,
Ashtavakra's palace of laughter,
Rama walking with Vashistha,
sakuntala blooming in exile.
Hindu is sacrifice,
the bow, the arrow, the offering.
Hindu is Buddha beneath the Bodhi tree,
Svetambara and Digambara,
non-violence holding a sword of truth.
Hindu is nature's law
and the marriage of opposites,
the eternal music unheard.
Hindu is civilization beyond time,
beauty that does not age.
Kali, Durga, Lakshmi,
dark sky, star-filled,
and starless emptiness
overflowing with love.
Hindu is Rina, Tine, Debolina,
Aradhya, Aradhana, Mahalaxmi, Vishalaxmi,
Gautami and Satakarni,
Nanak and Omkar
sharing one breath.
Hindu is sound and silence,
Guru Gobind and Jupiter turning together.
Mahavira, Shibaji, Rana Pratap,
strength disciplined by dharma.
Sanjukta, Padmini, Santoshi Ma,
grace wearing many faces.
Hindu is Gurudwara and temple,
poem and poet,
writer and novel,
song and singer.
Tolerance and turbulence,
meditation and revolution.
Hindu is Krishna's flute,
Ashtavakra's laughter,
Vashistha's stillness,
the music of emptiness itself.
Hindu is Rama and Lakshmana
walking on dust,
the source of peace that does not retreat.
Hindu is the temple of ancient knowing,
ever new, ever present,
a song without end.
