Home Away From Home Poem by Kelly Boutin

Home Away From Home

Build me a home away from my home
so I can pretend for a while
build me a life of sugar and spice
so I can pretend to smile.

Build me a dream that I could never dream
of ever coming true
build me a lie to fool my eyes
so I don't have to think about you.

Dig up some peace from the cemetery trees
so I can sleep at night
write me some poems so I don't feel alone
though in the end they'll take my life.

Sing me a song that goes on so long
I can just be still and listen
play me a tune from the broken side of the moon
that never turns into a gibbon's.

Take me to a place where I can't make mistakes
and where I can just write down my feelings
leave me to hurt in my broken words
or paint them upon my ceiling...

Where I can watch them and know just why I let go
when I could've just been sleeping
and my cliff will finally rest on the edge of my bed,
thinking I'm only dreaming.

So build me a trap so I can never look back,
just scream at the road ahead
build me a stream where I can float on my back
until I realize I'm already dead.

Oh, just build me a home away from my home
so I can pretend for a while
build me a life of sugar and spice
so I can pretend to smile.
