How Can You Say That I Will Love You Forever Poem by Francis Duggan

How Can You Say That I Will Love You Forever

How can you say that I will love you forever since you only have so many years to live
Much better to say until the Reaper claims my life's breath the love I feel for you to you I'll give
Eighty years of living is surely not forever and with your last breath your love for one with you will die
Immortality when it is applied to humans is just another ordinary lie
In the old marriage vows till death do us part are words that do make far more sense to me
For how can you love someone forever since forever is eternity
We can only love till the Reaper claims the life's breath from us since life after death is another thing
And for some there won't be a tomorrow and for all of us there is a final Spring,
You cannot love someone forever only till the life from you does depart
Though many marry for money and not love in such cases the head rules the heart,
'Tis not hard to say I'll love you forever mere words are so easy to say
The love you feel for someone will die with you it will not live beyond your last day
You can say till the moment I die I will love you and be devoted to you
And though true love is a wonderful feeling for some it does not always remain true.
